In Final
If you have a video to turn in, post it under this topic. Final Reflection Questions. 1. This semester, you worked on two scenes and created a monologue. What surprised you? This could be something you thought would be challenging but found yourself comfortable doing OR it can be something you found challenging but made it through. 2. What advice would you give to a student who is just starting their work on an acting scene? 3. Did you complete your Student Evaluation sent via email from Banner? Please do so. I will accept work until Wednesday, December 16th at 11:59 pm.

Write your monologue! Consider that it should have a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning wants to let us know who you are and who you are talking to. The middle wants to let us know what you want and what is keeping you from getting it. The end shows us how you are getting what you want; maybe your character gets what they want, maybe they do not.
This is all no more than a page.

Post a video of your monologue, from beginning to end. You do not need to be word perfect in terms of what you wrote. Think of this as a draft. We will share notes on this draft so that you can create the final version.

Team 1- Post a Video where your character shows what is at stake. This can include a tactic shift or a confession of a given circumstances or a moment of silence. There are many options. The video should be at least 4 sentences long. Team 2 - Events and Storytelling. How can you tell us the best story? Sound? Costumes? Sure. But what about video placement? Video Movement? How can you help us believe you are who you are and where you are? Think about Obstacles- the thing that is keeping your character from getting what they want. We will discuss this on Monday after Thanksgiving.

Film a short video of your character. This video is a possible begining to your final video. The video should be three sentences long at least. In the video, it should be established WHO you are speaking to.
If you want to go back to the examples from last week to see how those characters establish who they are speaking to, you may.
Please note that your character MAY be using a video to speak to their audience, or they may NOT be. The person you are speaking to could be in the same room as you, we just don't see them. They could be on the phone, they could be using a radio transmission from space (one of the students last year did this)
It is up to you.

In November 11 Writing Prompt
Remember the Monologue characters from last week? The given circumstances for the Saleswoman include: She is in her home, she is married and her husband helps her with her videos. She is probably in the North East since she references Cherry Hill. She is struggling financially and was hoping to be able to support herself so she probably does not have a full-time job. She has a boss who calls her everyday. She needs to recruit more workers. She wants to feel connected. She is probably pretty low status. Or the Painter; he normally lives in NYC. He is somewhere quiet and in a studio. He was given money to focus on his painting. He is educated as he references different important painters. He has not been sleeping well and is having trouble painting recently. He is anxious about the state of the environment. He has a medium to high status as he has been awarded this opportunity. Let's think about your character. Who are you? 1. Where are they physically? one sentence at least
2. How do they spend their time/ what is their job? one sentence at least
3. What is important to them? one sentence at least
4. What are they anxious/worried about? one sentence at least
5. What are five other Given Circumstances about them? Age/education/health level/economic level/ status/ favorite hobby/family set up/physical fitness/ anything at all from their past? Be specific and creative! BUT KEEP IT REAL! I don't mind if the character is very close to who you are a real person. I don't mind if they are very different. I don't mind if they are in a more fantastical/ sci-fi situation, like the Online Monologue guy who was on the porch. But they must be human. Think about things that are on your mind right now and draw from that. Or use the play you read or one of the online monologues you watched for inspiration. Answer the Five Questions above as a written post. You can title it as something about the person you are making.

Instructions So we are going to make our own short monologues that we will work on each week. Each week I will ask you to write a little about your “character” using the tools we learned in the first half of the semester. It is going to be really great and I am excited to see what you will create. We will eventually video and post our short monologues here in our Virtual Classroom, but for now, let’s just take the first steps. For your today's class, I want you to watch one (or more - they can be helpful later) of the videos linked below. They are simple one-person monologues. These monologues are like little letters from the speaker to an unseen person. Remember that as we build our own monologues. After watching the monologues, answer these two questions in a post: 1. In the Online Monologue, who was the character on the screen speaking to? You can do one or more of the characters. one sentence each 2. What do they want from the unseen partner (s) ? one sentence
3. What tactics are they using? 3 words
4. Where are they? How do you know? 2 sentences
5. What is an example from the video of a story telling tool? one sentence. Online Monologue Examples These are Fake; they are not real people. I thought it might be helpful to see some examples of online monologues. These are longer than the ones you will be making. But maybe they can inspire you a little. Ignore the Mad Deep chatbot you might see; just watch the video. Online Monologue Option 1: An online saleswoman loses her faith. https://www.die-castphilly.org/ylvvv-dress Online Monologue Option 2: A college vlogger is worried about her dad. https://www.die-castphilly.org/q23-mas-scara Online Monologue Option 3: A man is getting ready for a weird and fantastical event. https://www.die-castphilly.org/b31ymacaris-1 Online Monologue Option 4: A painter is having strange dreams. https://www.die-castphilly.org/yellow-guy-1

Take the 1-page section of text that you wrote about in today’s post and film it two different ways. The first filming, use the first set of tactics, then film it again using the second. The scene will be different because of this. Post both versions as separate clips Remember to use moments of silence, physical actions in your window, and the storytelling choices. Post this by November 1st at 11:59 pm

In Journal Entry #3
Answer all of the following questions for Journal #3. Even if you “don’t know” the answer because your character is not in the play enough to have set answers, you must answer them anyway. Make your best guess based on what is in the text. Part of portraying a character is making choices. Think about the character and make choices. 1. List 7 important examples of your character’s personal given circumstances? (7 sentences) 2. List 5 important aspects of the relationship between your character and the character they are speaking to? 3. How do they know each other, what is their relationship, is status important, etc? Do not repeat given circumstances from above. (7 sentences) 4. What do they want from the character they are speaking to. Be specific. (3 sentences) 5. Why do they want it? Cite examples from the play. (7 sentences) 6. What will happen to your character if they do not get what they want from the character they are speaking to? ( 5 sentences) 7. What are five tactics/verbs that you character uses? ( 5 words) 8. Why do they use those tactics as opposed to others? example why do they threaten instead of plead? (5 sentences) 9. How do you think your character sees themselves? What do they think of themselves? (10 sentences) What are they afraid of? (3 sentences) 10. How do they protect themselves? (3 sentences) 11. What makes them happy? (3 sentences) 12. In what ways are you similar to your character and in what ways are you different. (10 sentences) 13. Attach a photo of your what your character might look like to you. I do not care about age, race, gender, for the image. Maybe it is what they are wearing? Maybe it is how they are standing? Maybe it is an actor you could imagine playing the role in a movie?

In Mid-Tern Play Choices
Gruesome Playground Injuries by Rajiv Joseph The story tracks two people who meet in the nurse's room during recess in Kindergarten, with each scene tracking their some-what-romantic-but-also-not relationship from kids to adults. Funny exploration of "damaged" people. Nursing by Adam Rapp This is a realistic play that has a Sci-Fi bent. It imagines a world where illness has been eradicated and only exists in a museum but a group of revolutionaries is out the change the world. Dark and twisty. She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen A high school cheerleader tries to connect to her recently deceased little sister by joining her Dungeons and Dragons game and gains a new understanding of her sister's identity. Scenes between all different types of characters. A little campy and a little touching.
Vigils by Noah Haidle This is a whimsical comedy of sorts about a woman who keeps the soul of her husband in a box but is maybe ready to move on. Beautiful, funny, and a touch sad. Water By The Spoonful by Quiara Alegría Hudes A slick play about a group of recovering addicts using on-line message boards and chats to support each other while focusing on the relationship between a brother and sister. Both funny and poignant. You can find the files to each of the plays in the comments below.
