Doug has some kind of mental handicap through the story, though it doesn't explicitly stat so it can be implied from the text. He is also from a very normal and kind family as stated by Kayleen. Doug is also handicapped physically as throughout the play he loses parts of his body and function. He is in love with Kayleen it is shown he has feelings for her as he always tries to find her and tries to kiss her or a couple occasions. Doug has only ever been in love with one character and that is Kayleen though she never reciprocates his feelings and he is never shown to have lasting interest in anyone else. Though on that note he was engaged once though ran away before the wedding, I think this is because he never wanted to marry her only make Kayleen jealous.
Some important aspects between Doug and Kayleen's relationship are that they both have different kinds of scarring Kayleen has mental while Dougs is physical. Though unlike Kayleen doug's is connected to her as almost all of his come from him trying to be with her or find her. Doug and Kayleen are also best friends and he is always there for her and more than willing to help her even if she doesn't want it, however Kayleen does not do the same for him. Throughout the entire story Doug is trying to find and help Kayleen because he loves her however she pushes him away at every point in the story culminating in him rejecting her when she tries to find him at the end.
They met each other as children by accident when Doug got hurt at school and Kayleen had a stomach ache with was very common for her at the time. Their relationship was best friends for a very long time in the story practically from the moment they met. However during the entire story they drift apart due to Kayleen rejecting Doug and the happiness he tries to bring her. This could be because of a couple of things though I do think their status meant alot to Dough as he did love her at one point but she is always rejecting him and telling him that they are nothing and she never saw him while he was hurt.
Doug originally wanted a friend from Kayleen though this grew into love as they matured and grew. This would ultimately change as she would keep rejecting him. So when she finally wanted him he no longer wanted anything to do with her.
A specific example of Doug wanting her is on page twenty six scene three he asks her to dance and kisses her. At this point Doug is a young teen just coming to that age where he would become interested in dating and women. So he wants to date his best friend he probably thinks that they're perfect since they are best friends. This is a sharp difference from where they end up in the last scene page fifty seven where he is completely and wholeheartedly rejecting her and everything she is trying to offer to him. Which is most likely just friendship however from all their past trauma together he is no longer that person and just wants peace with his life, he is happy where he is and does not want to become his past self.
If Doug does not get what he wants he will most likely keep trying. This is almost exactly what he does throughout the play. Though if this would happen at the end he would most likely go back to who he once was. This means he would be at Kayleens beck and call, he would give up himself as a unique and grow person.
aggressive, plead, love, apologize, reject
He uses these as it ties to what he wants and treats others. He loves Kayleen so he tries to be gentle with her, plead, apologize, love her. however as she continues to reject him he changes, he stops caring for her in the same way. So at the end she is trying to be gentle with him but they have changed roles. Now he is rejecting and aggressive towards her because he no longer loves or cares for her, he is done being gentle.
Doug sees himself almost like a knight on a quest to help or save Kayleen. He is always putting himself in harms way for her, trying to go through her pain and change her life for the better. As she gets further away from him he is no longer her knight he is an explorer lost and trying to find a long treasure known as Kayleen. Though he can never find her, she only comes to him when she wants even if she doesn't know it. She is almost impossible for him to find when he tries and only ever stumbles on her when he least expects it. Though this too changes to an older man who has put down his armor and stopped adventuring he is done. He accepts that he could not find this treasure and doesnt even know what to do with it if he did find it. So when she comes to him in the end of the play he rejects her he spent his entire life looking for her but doesnt know what it will do to him once he has it. He likes where he's ended up and rejects her coming back into his life.
Doug protects himself by getting himself hurt. This may sound strange but he does it so he can find out if Kayleen still cares about him. He needs to know this to protect him from learning that she does not care as finding that out would hurt him more than any injury.
What makes Dough happy is Kayleen. He does everything he can to see her or help her even if its terrible for him such as when he cuts himself with her razor blades. This only stops when he finds out she no longer cares about him in the same way as they used to.
Im similar to him in a way that Ill do almost anything to keep my friends happy and on the right path. Even if its hard I will always be there for them. Doug similarly always tries to be there for Kayleen even when it hard for him. Like him at the end of the story im very content with my life. I dont try to seek excitement or try to chase the past life moves forward and we have to move with it the past cant change nor would I want it to. Life is good where it is to change the past would be to change who we are and Doug does not want to go back to the past as seen when he rejects Kayleen. Though we differ as I would not try to chase someone, if they don't try they I wouldn't either some people are not worth all the effort or love no matter how much you would want it the other way. Clearly in the story it takes Dough a long time to realize this.
