Doug shifts because he recognizes that he does not want or need his past life back. His past life was very negative on his mental and physical health. He has now grown and matured out of that relationship. Kayleen pushing at him trying to fix the relationship caused the shift. Kayleen needs the relationship for closure, but Doug does not.

Kayleen begins to push back harder at Doug because she is completely desperate. She needed the closure from Doug to move on in her life. She is trying to get past what she thinks is Doug being initially against it, but she began to realize that he truly felt that way.
