COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for non-theatre majors to explore performance. Through the use of in class exercises and scene studies, students examine how actors strengthen and use imagination, awareness and creativity, and how they analyze, prepare and perform a role. All classes will be held online with both synchronistic and asynchronistic assignments.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of our course of study in Experiencing Acting is to improve students’ basic skills in their acting process and technique in creating and acting a role from printed scripts. Specific skills addressed include listening and responding, analyzing a scene, playing an objective, and living truthfully under imagined circumstances. · Students will understand and apply the underlying principles, approaches and techniques of acting.
· Students can effectively use voice, body, and imagination to create and perform a character.
· Students will build self-confidence in public presentations.
· Students will effectively critique live theatrical presentations.
Rowan Core Requirements
All first-year, non-transfer student who entered Rowan on or after Fall 2018 must complete the new general education requirements, known as Rowan Core. (Students who arrived before Fall 2018—and all new transfer students—are still following the existing general education requirements.) Students in Rowan Core must complete course requirements in six literacies: Artistic, Communicative, Global, Humanistic, Quantitative and Scientific. Experiencing Acting is a course that satisfies the Artistic Literacy.
All students in this course will be assessed on the following Rowan Core Outcomes for this literacy:
1. Students can use vocabulary related to and names of practitioners of various styles, genres, and traditions
2. Students will apply and practice foundation creative techniques, such as visual, verbal, physical and auditory expression, through the creation of an original product or performance.
3. Students can demonstrate how the body, voice and mind can be used to express the creative process.

DEPARTMENTAL ATTENDANCE POLICY
Because most of the important learning for this course occurs in class, it is absolutely essential that you be Present and On Time. In an acting class, when you miss a class it is almost impossible to “make-up” the work or class that you missed. You are allowed 3 absences, after which your grade drops for each additional absence. Six (6) absences or more will result in your failure of this course. More than 10mins late is considered a FULL absence). 2 lates=1 absence. (Late is any time after class begins).
If you are involved in Rowan Athletics or other school-related activities it is your responsibility to communicate this info in advance of an absence. Missing class due to athletic or other school-related commitments is still considered as an absence.
